El padre de Meghan Markle se convirtió este jueves en la noticia de la boda del sábado de su hija con el príncipe Enrique de Inglaterra al anunciar ésta que no asistirá al enlace para "concentrarse en su salud".
"Desgraciadamente, mi padre no asistirá a nuestra boda. Siempre he querido a mi padre y espero que se le dé el espacio que necesita para concentrarse en su salud", dijo la prometida en un comunicado difundido por el palacio de Kensington, al término de una semana de rumores sobre Thomas Markle, de 73 años.
"Me gustaría dar las gracias a todos los que me ofrecieron generosos mensajes de apoyo. Por favor, sepan lo mucho que Enrique y yo deseamos compartir nuestro día especial con vosotros", concluyó Markle en su breve comunicado.
La exactriz no reveló si el padre fue operado del corazón el miércoles, como afirmó el medio estadounidense TMZ.
Resta ahora saber quién llevará al altar a la novia, y todo apunta a que lo hará su madre Dora Ragland, que tenía previsto llegar este jueves al Reino Unido para asistir a la ceremonia.
El padre de Meghan Markle se vio atrapado en la relación compleja, y a veces amarga entre la prensa y la familia real británica.
Su presencia hubiera estado precedida del escándalo de las fotos que se prestó a escenificar sobre sus preparativos para la boda, pese a que se había quejado del acoso de la prensa.
El asunto es un desastre para el palacio, que hasta ahora había conseguido dominar la información de la boda con sus anuncios inofensivos y bien encadenados sobre el pastel, las damas de honor o el programa de la jornada.
Markle vive en el pueblo mexicano de Rosarito, cerca de San Diego, al otro lado de la frontera con Estados Unidos.
Los preparativos de la boda en Windsor, una localidad a orillas del Támesis, a 40 km de Londres en dirección oeste, no se detuvieron por la noticia del padre de la novia.
Este jueves hubo un ensayo de todo el aspecto militar de la ceremonia, que incluye escoltar a la pareja cuando realice su paseo en carroza por la ciudad de 30.000 habitantes.
El paseo partirá de la capilla de San Jorge al término del enlace, recorrerá la ciudad y concluirá de vuelta en el castillo de Windsor, residencia real, donde tendrá lugar la recepción-almuerzo que ofrecerá la abuela de Enrique, la reina Isabel II.
Unos 250 militares tomarán parte en la ceremonia.
La ciudad ha sido tomada al asalto por policía fuertemente armada, periodistas, turistas y curiosos, creando división de opiniones entre sus vecinos.
"Es un maldito dolor de muelas", dijo Michael Mannix, mientras tomaba una pinta de cerveza y fumaba un cigarrillo a las puertas de un pub.
"Van a suspender todos mis autobuses", dijo este vecino de 71 años.
"Es exagerado, está a reventar, furgonetas de televisiones", añadió, señalando una de ellas.
"No me interesa la monarquía. No me acercaré el sábado, probablemente trabajaré en el jardín", concluyó.

Windsor Castle, Queen Elizabeth II’s home to the west of London, is the oldest inhabited castle in the world. More than 600 guests have been invited to the wedding service and afternoon reception, with 200 invited to the evening reception.

The wedding service will begin at St George’s Chapel at midday and it will be conducted by Dean of Windsor, David Conner. The exchange of wedding vows will be officiated by Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, the spiritual leader of the Anglican Communion. Michael Bruce Curry, the Presiding Bishop and Primate of the Episcopal Church, will deliver the address.

After the service family members will gather on the West Steps to see off the newlyweds as they depart in an Ascot Landau carriage through Windsor. The procession will end with a ride up the Long Walk toward the castle gates.
